Fapes will provide approximately R$ 300,000 to support a research exchange developed at Ufes in partnership with the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems in Italy.

The year 2026 began with positive news for the internationalization of research in Espírito Santo. The National Council of State Research Support Foundations (CONFAP) announced last week the results of the CONFAP & MAECI 2024 Call, which aims to support joint research projects between Brazil and Italy. A study funded by the Espírito Santo Research and Innovation Support Foundation (Fapes) is among the ten projects approved nationwide.

The approved project, titled “Hybrid Superconductor/Topological Insulator System: A Promising Spin Valve Device (HYSPID)”, is coordinated by Professor Edson Passamani Caetano from the Department of Physics and Chemistry at the Center for Exact Sciences of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes). The bilateral cooperation in the field of Physics of Matter and Advanced Materials will be carried out in partnership with the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems (IMM-CNR), located in the city of Catania, Italy, under the co-coordination of Italian researcher Roberto Mantovan.

The project’s main objective is to combine the key scientific advances achieved by both teams into a single innovative device designed to explore spin-triplet current conversion. To enable the research exchange, Fapes will provide approximately R$ 300,000 in funding from the Espírito Santo State Fund for Science and Technology (Funcitec).

Fapes Director-General Rodrigo Varejão celebrated the project’s approval in the international call, the result of the Foundation’s partnership with CONFAP and the Italian organization MAECI. “Supporting the internationalization of research is strategic for strengthening science in Espírito Santo, expanding its reach and increasing its relevance on both the national and international stage,” he emphasized.
